I was honored to hear that my research,”El Tubador: The Tuba’s Use in Banda Sinaloense,” received the designation of Honorable Mention for the 2012 Clifford Bevan Award for Excellence in Research. This award will be presented at the 2012 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria, where I will also be presenting a solo performance with The University of Texas-Pan American Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble. In addition to the award, I will been submitting an article for publication in the International Tuba-Euphonium Journal.

Jorge Davi “J.D.” Salas, a native of Alamo, Texas (Rio Grande Valley), joined the faculty of Stephen F. Austin State University in the fall of 2006 where he serves as Artist/Instructor of Tuba-Euphonium Studies. J.D. received his Bachelors of Music degree in tuba performance from Baylor University in Waco, TX where he studied with Dr. Michael A. Fischer and his Master of Music degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. He is currently finishing the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Kentucky where he served as the teaching assistant studying under Dr. Skip Gray. Prior to his appointment at SFA, J.D. served as Artist/Instructor of Tuba & Euphonium Studies at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand where he served as the country’s first full-time tuba-euphonium professor. Other previous teaching appointments include adjunct positions at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY where he taught low brass & jazz bass and Instructor of Tuba at Marshall University in Huntington, WV.
Mr. Salas has performed regularly with the Louisville Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of BrassArts Bangkok, one of the premier brass chamber ensembles in Thailand and performed one of the first solo tuba recitals in Vietnam at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music and at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand in 2004. J.D. has recently presented recital performances at both the 2007 ITEA Regional Conference in Austin, TX and the 2009 ITEA Regional Conference in Corpus Christi, TX. An accomplished string bass player in both the jazz and classical idioms, J.D. has performed with the Temple Symphony Orchestra, Disneyland All-American College Band in Anaheim, California, and the Disneyland Paris International Show Band in Paris, France where performed with many musical legends as Bobby Shew, Jiggs Wigham, and Ricky Ford.
J.D. has also been a semi-finalist in many International tuba artist competitions such as the Falcone Tuba/Euphonium Artist Competition in 2002 & 2003 and the 2002 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference Artist Competition.

Fall 2011 End of the Semester – Enchilada Fest
This week is the last full week of classes at SFA and traditionally I host a studio party for the students to thank them for their hard work over the semester. Now, most people believe it when I say that 3 full pans of enchiladas evaporate in a matter of minutes but I thought I’d document it this year for fun. I’ll add to this as the week goes by!
If only these ingredients could magically turn into a full meal for 23 tuba & euphonium players…..

Come checkout the SFA Tuba-Euphonium Studio and East Texas Tuba-Euphonium community present this year’s TubaChristmas Concert – Saturday December 3rd. The concert will be held in the FLC of 1st United Methodist Church – Nacogdoches, TX ( 201 East Hospital Street) at 4:00pm.

Octubafest 2011 Done!!
Well, another Octubafest has come to a close. There were some great performances by the SFA Tuba-Euphonium studio and I could’nt be prouder. Tonight’s TubaWeen concert was a fun closer to the season! Until next year and on to the rest of the semester. Next for the studio is a Music In The Schools performance in Christ Episcopal School and TubaChristmas!
